DUUUUUUDE! Get it South Korea!
That’s the article directly. Please give it a read.
If South Korean actors and writers strike against Netflix, Netflix would be COMPLETELY fucked.
If this spreads to animators it would halt the entire anime industry and severely affect the Korean and Japanese economies.
So let’s get this ball rolling and fix some wage theft.
If anyone wants to infodump an explanation for this meme-
The full source is this killer video essay by hbomberguy:
Here’s the summary: In the Roblox video game, there is a sound of someone saying “oof!” that became something of a meme itself.
The sound was actually acquired with usage rights from a sound pack made by the company Tommy Tallarico Studios (owned by the man of that name).
Seeing how popular that sound was, Tallarico started making noise on social media angling for a payout. The general conclusion is that 1) Tallarico isn’t owed money because Roblox likely got the sound usage rights legally, and 2) Tallarico was asking for an undisclosed but absurd amount of money.
The amount of effort Tallarico put into trying to get paid (again) got hbomberguy digging. Not only did he conclude that the sound effect was almost certainly made by Joey Kuras (an employee of Tallarico Studios at the time), but hbomb found compelling evidence that Tallarico’s much-lauded Guinness World Records were at best misrepresented and at worst granted on a flimsy basis. Shortly after hbomberguy emailed Guinness inquiring about the evidence for one of Tallarico’s records, the record in question disappeared from the Guinness World Records site.
The open secret this meme ultimately refers to is that Guinness World Records aren’t as much a historical record company, but a publicity firm. You pay them money and they figure out an overly-specific record for which you qualify (or help you put one together, like “most eggs balanced on one arm on a Sunday afternoon”). In the case of Tommy Tallarico, the records were seemingly awarded based on… Tommy just telling Guinness what he did and no-one contradicting him. The implication being that Guinness does the bare minimum of fact-checking when they award their “world records”.
tl;dr hbomberguy was investigating claims by Tommy Tallarico and kept finding lies, leading him to find out how easy it is to lie to Guinness World Records
This is legit scary. Marsha Blackburn is openly admitting that her bill KOSA will be used to drive trans people off the internet.
But Democrats are lining up to support it, and LGBTQIA+ orgs have dropped their opposition. WTF WTF WTF
WHAT? I need to know who dropped opposition so we can write them 10,000 emails…
